2022 Cycle Impacts

Thank you to all who contributed to the 2022 code cycle development process. The resulting code changes will provide significant energy savings to Californians. Below are the estimated impacts of Codes and Standards Enhancement (CASE) initiative efforts by type of energy, code cycle year, building type, construction type, system, and measure.

For a summary of all 2022 code cycle changes and their estimated impacts (which include those from the CASE team along with many other stakeholders), view the California Energy Commission’s 2022 Building Energy Efficiency Standards Summary.

First-Year Savings

Gas & Electricity Savings

Gas:
17.84 MMTherms

Electricity:
1,034 GWh

equivalent to the annual electricity usage of

133,150 homes

Peak Demand Reduction

132.8 MW

equivalent to the peak demand traditionally met by

1.2 peaker plants

GHG Savings

344,577
metric tons of CO2e

equivalent to the carbon sequestered by planting

5,697,648 trees

Equivalencies calculated using data and assumptions provided by the Environmental Protection Agency and the California Energy Commission Energy Assessments Division.

Impacts by Code Cycle

We made even bigger strides this code cycle, particularly in electricity savings. Each code cycle builds on the previous cycle’s work. Our collective impacts help make California’s energy landscape brighter and more resilient.
