The Multifamily Energy Use Study was conducted by Evergreen Economics and Michaels Energy from late 2019 until early 2020. The study comprised 90 on-site surveys of multifamily properties across California. Evergreen developed a representative sample of these multifamily properties based on data from CoStar, a commercial real estate information provider. The on-site surveys collected comprehensive data on the buildings (i.e., configuration, HVAC, water heating, etc.); common areas (i.e., lobbies, hallways, laundry rooms, etc.); and one to three tenant units per site.
